The buzz surrounding Salaar 2 has been a topic of much speculation ever since the release of its predecessor, Salaar (2023). Directed by Prashanth Neel and starring Prabhas, the film was marketed as an action-packed spectacle that would redefine the genre. While Salaar had its moments and generated considerable excitement, its overall box office performance has been subject to mixed reviews and questions about its true success.

Salaar 2 Is Happening Or It Is Just A Marketing Gimmick?

Despite doing decent business, there have been whispers that the film’s producers may have resorted to strategies like purchasing large quantities of tickets to create a more favorable box office image. With Salaar not being the clear smash hit it was initially touted to be, the big question is: Will Salaar 2 actually happen, or is it just a desperate attempt by the makers to capitalize on a brand that may not have the momentum they hope for?

When Salaar was first announced, the expectations were sky-high, especially given the collaboration between Prabhas and Prashanth Neel, the director behind the KGF franchise, which had taken the industry by storm. The film was hyped as the next big thing, promising a high-octane action thriller that would appeal to global audiences. However, upon its release, the film’s performance in theaters was a mixed bag. While Salaar did earn substantial amounts at the box office, particularly in its opening weekend, the numbers were far from the blockbuster success many had anticipated.

Producers Of Salaar Purchased Tickets

Reports have surfaced suggesting that the producers may have “purchased” a significant number of tickets to inflate the film’s early box office figures, creating a sense of hype and excitement. This tactic, although not uncommon in the industry, has led to further questions about the film’s true performance. When factoring in word-of-mouth reviews, which were often critical of the film’s pacing, character development, and narrative, it becomes clear that Salaar did not achieve the kind of runaway success that films like RRR or KGF did.

In this context, one might ask whether the push for a sequel is based on genuine belief in the franchise’s potential or is simply an attempt to salvage the brand and maintain the momentum generated by the initial hype.

Prabhas Is A Busy Actor

Prabhas, the reigning star of Indian cinema, is undoubtedly one of the busiest actors in the industry right now. After the colossal success of Baahubali, Prabhas became a pan-Indian sensation. Saaho, Radhe Shyam and Adipurush were box office disasters which tainted the actor’s image. Salaar, though not a runaway success, managed to do better than his last three releases.

Given Prabhas’ packed schedule, it’s fair to wonder if Salaar 2 would take precedence. The actor’s commitment to multiple films, along with his need for personal downtime, makes it challenging for him to dedicate significant time and energy to a sequel. As a result, even if the film were to move forward, the production timeline could be extended, potentially delaying the sequel for several years. Prabhas’ involvement in other big-budget films like Kalki 2, Spirit, Fauji and Raja Saab, which also involves high stakes and a substantial global budget, might further push Salaar 2 down the priority list.

Prashanth Neel Has His Hands Very Full At The Moment

On the other hand, Prashanth Neel, the director behind Salaar, has his own set of commitments that may limit his availability for a quick follow-up. Neel’s KGF: Chapter 2 was one of the biggest blockbusters in Indian cinema, and expectations for his next projects are equally high. He is currently working with Jr NTR on an untitled film.

Neel’s filmmaking style that is very detailed, suggests that rushing into a sequel without proper preparation would not be in line with his creative process. Given that the Salaar franchise lacks the same level of narrative and character development depth as KGF, it remains to be seen if Neel would want to return to the Salaar universe, especially if the first film did not deliver the critical acclaim he may have hoped for.

Given the circumstances—Salaar’s modest success, Prabhas’ packed schedule, and Neel’s competing commitments—it’s hard to definitively say whether Salaar 2 will come to fruition. The film’s producers may be hoping that the brand will sustain its momentum, but with the first film not living up to its full potential, the risks involved in making a sequel are significant.

Are Makers Trying To Push Narrative Around Salaar 2 For Marketability?

The makers might, however, see Salaar 2 as a necessary move to capitalize on the franchise’s existing fanbase and marketability. After all, even if Salaar didn’t break box office records, it was still a commercial success to some extent, and a sequel could be an opportunity to right some of the perceived wrongs from the first film. However, without significant creative improvements or a more engaging storyline, Salaar 2 could face the same fate as its predecessor: underwhelming box office numbers and a lukewarm reception.

In conclusion, while Salaar 2 may still happen due to the financial interests of its producers and the existing franchise potential, the reality is that it’s far from a guaranteed success. Prabhas and Prashanth Neel’s heavy schedules and the lukewarm reception of the first film leave plenty of room for doubt. Ultimately, Salaar 2 may just end up as an ambitious but overly optimistic attempt to cash in on a brand that, for now, has yet to prove its true staying power.
